BMW iNEXT to feature single curved display

BMW’s “technology flagship” iNEXT will include an enormous, unified control and infotainment display. But is bigger really better? And if so, where do we go from here?

The curved display is promising to be a central feature of the iNEXT, set for release in 2021. BMW announced the inclusion this week alongside a teaser image that gives an indication of just how big this display will be.

Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design:

“The curved, single-section display is the central control element and represents the modern interpretation of driver orientation. It occupies a dominant central position in a highly iconic display structure that provides a highly distinctive display experience.”

We have yet to see what will be included on the display, which promises to integrate both control and infotainment elements typically kept separate by automakers.

The curved and slim design are a clear response to consumer electronics trends. The result comes off looking like a particularly adventurous computer monitor.

Robert Irlinger, Head of BMW i:

“The new display unit enables intuitive, natural and ergonomically perfect use of the touch function. [The display] takes us to the next level of driver-oriented controls.”

BMW have stated that display elements will be moveable between the driver cockpit and passenger-accessible central section. They have not confirmed exactly how large the complete screen will be, only that occupants won’t be able to see its connection to the instrument panel.

The design marks the boldest of a recent trend toward increasingly-large touch displays. Automakers have been consistently eager to associate EVs with modern design trends and technology. It will be interesting to see whether other models from BMW or other manufacturers follow the iNEXT in adopting an ultrawide display.

No word on whether the iNEXT will be able to access the JET Charge blog, but your current device certainly can. Be sure to check back regularly for more EV news and updates.
